In 1970, Zambia commissioned Yugoslav engineers to design and construct a world-class conference centre in just four months. The centre was completed in an impressive 107 days, just in time to host the third Summit Conference of Non-Aligned Nations in September 1970. Zambia’s First President, Kenneth Kaunda, officially opened the Mulungushi Conference Hall, marking it as a milestone in the country’s growth as a sovereign nation

It hosted numerous international diplomatic conferences, including the 1976 US-Africa talks led by Henry Kissinger and the 1984 Namibia Peace Talks. The venue also became a popular spot for entertainment, with legendary performances such as James Brown’s iconic concert in 1970.

To meet modern demands, the MICC underwent several upgrades. In 2001, a new East Wing was built to host the Lusaka Summit, where the Organization of African Unity (OAU) transformed into the African Union (AU).
